  1. What a great story A true western that was way than just an MM romance on a ranch where all the cowboys just conveniently happen to be gay Not that I don t love those too, but this was so different and I loved it.There was romance and there were sexy times, but than that it was just a well told tale of good guys, bad guys, hard word and camaraderie as a group of misfit men not all gay mind you, but all were outsiders for their time build a ranch and a place to call home. The bad guys were reall [...]

  2. Full length novel about a ranch were people who have nowhere to go and nothing good to hope for, where people who fucked up or are fucked up, can have a second chance at finding, if not happiness, at least peace The ranch was built from scratch and is owned by Ben, a harmless looking guy who is in fact damn scary once you know him Ben, his young lover Obie and the people working at his ranch are a kind of family they look after each other They try to live peacefully in the community, but not eve [...]

  3. I didn t think that I would ever really be able to get through this book Not because it was badly written But because it was so well written that I felt as if I were being transported back into this time period where than just homophobia ran rampant, but where racism was not only normal but encouraged.I m glad that I finished it though because after I got over my initial cringing over certain words and aspects I was able to actually enjoy this book Not to mention the fact that I love history, a [...]

  4. I m a sucker for a careful man who knows what he s about, and both Ben,the ranch owner and temper Free, the new hand, fit into this category nicely At first, I thought this book would focus on an established relationship, between been and his younger lover, but the point of focus shifted to Temper, one of the most interesting characters in the book A black man in a time where that wasn t always the safest thing to me, he held himself with a gentle respect, and his view and the preacher s view in [...]

  5. This is the Old West with real cowboys, good guys and bad guys Something as mundane as a cowboy hat becomes extremely important to the plot The story is incredibly exciting The finale grabbed me and wouldn t let go It is also unbelievably sad in places People get hurt, emotionally and physically, and people die I sobbed and sobbed when one of the major characters well I won t tell that because it s a spoiler, but read this with a big box of Kleenex at hand I am a huge fan of Ms Parker as of this [...]

  6. 3.5 Stars This book kinda stalled for me at he beginning, but I ended up liking it a lot than I thought I wouldThe thing was, I was not really sure what time it was supposed to be set in so the language threw me off a bitere are some expressions that bothergardless if they are supposed to be historically accurate they we re fucked up theney re still fucked up now. That being said I liked the characters and the story itself was good I thought A little unrealistic, but hey it s fiction so I can go [...]

  7. Reviewed by Jamie Speaking for myself, my standards for fiction are high There are a lot of half baked westerns out there, and when I received this title to review, I took one look at the cover and thought, oh no, not another oneYet this book was a pleasant surprise At last It was well written and had aninteresting, unexpected story Dare I say, a proper plot line, rather than randomcowboys humping in the hay The cover does not do the story justice.I could easily see this book as a big budget fil [...]

  8. 4.5 starsI absolutely loved this book It was original and well written and I couldn t put it down Ann s review pretty much sums up all the good stuff My only niggle, and what kept this from being 5 stars, was the overuse of the phrase his lover It s one of those phrases that is like nails on a chalkboard for me I can usually get over it but it appeared 59 times in this story and it was grating I will reiterate, this is a fantastic story My issue is mine and would probably go unnoticed by most Hi [...]

  9. Wow I refuse to believe that a better m m cowboy novel exists out there It was unbelievably hard to tear my eyes away and when I had to my mind kept reliving the things I d read This one s gonna stay for me for a long, long time.By the way, that first sex scene was so hot and a brilliant way to show what was on Obie s mind Best showing of feelings during sex I ve read so far. This one goes into my Favorites folder.

  10. I actually read about Ben and Obie in the anthology Know When To Hold Em It was great seeing a fully fleshed out look at the workings of the Bar J with its diverse and wonderful cast of misfits and outcasts This is great character based fiction set in a historical western setting The romance is the icing on the cake.

  11. I really enjoyed this It had some issues and didn t live up to its full potential but the characters saved it and made it worth reading I would definitely read by this author. If you want to read my full review, click here

  12. 3.5 stars rounded uppretty solid historical western set on a ranch of misfits, would have liked some of the minor character s back stories fleshed out a bit .

  13. Well, this was truly one of the best ranchers book I read in a while now I really enjoyed this story The plot was well developed and pulled me into instantly I loved it

  14. Warning Please remember to have a stock of hankies on hand when attempting to read this book I ve read a few D.G Parker short stories and always found her writing to be thoughtful and accessible I was pleased to discover that she d written this longer novel and so dived in to read What I hadn t realised is that this book is a follow on from a short story which appears in the anthology Know When to Hold Em by Dreamspinner Press which I haven t read Fortunately, it isn t necessary to have read the [...]

  15. This book got on my radar because one of my GR friends gave it 5 stars which is a rarity so I thought I d give it a chance I didn t realize that there is the anthology Know When to Hold em where Ben Obie first meet I ll have to read that next I m not a historical buff so I never really figured out the time period of the story, not sure if it was early 1900s or late 1800s but regardless, I felt transported back in time. Two things really impressed and surprised me with the story The first was Temp [...]

  16. This was so much better than I had expected it to be I m a sucker for cowboy romances, god knows why, and I read this expecting it be a cute piece of fluff before I moved on to something serious Instead it packed an emotional wallop, employed fully rendered three dimensional characters, and made the reader and the characters thoroughly work for the ending Just fantastic Highly recommended.

  17. Overall I enjoyed this, though it s not a standout Don t be misled by the blurb this isn t Ben and Obie s story so much as the story of Temper and Larry, two ranch hands who work for Ben Interracial historical gay romance isn t that common, to say the least, and this is a fairly good offering, despite the fact that it never really feels as though it moves beyond a cautious pretty good.

  18. This is a slow read slow in the meaning that it is intense, and descriptive, and absorbing, and so very, very well written.Ben owns the Last Chance Ranch, Obie is his young lover, and the story is really about how everyone copes in a homophobic world The occasional tissue is needed.

  19. A Recommended Read Ms Parker writes historical western genre as if she lived it and is writing her personal journal This is a don t miss it novella and I can t recommend it highly enough To read this review in its entirety, please visit blackravensreviews p

  20. This was a fun cowboy ranch life story It s about the members of a ranch as a whole than a couple It flows along at an even pace and it was interesting to see White, Black Mexicans together portrayed good bad Yup, I love a good cowboy yarn.
