  1. So nostalgic going back and rating this I think I still have a few of the Xanth series floating around in my paperback boxes Really was one of my favorite series as a Young Adult.

  2. A nightmare is actually a mythological creature30 December 2011 Well, at this point in the Xanth series we are starting to move away from the main characters from the previous books to single books, set in Xanth, evolving around a new character In this novel we meet Mare Imbrium, a Night Mare Nightmares are given the task of carrying bad dreams to the people of Xanth However Imbrium s problem is that she has obtained half a soul which she got from the previous book and this has affected her abil [...]

  3. Imbrium is the main character of this story She s the author s first female protagonist in this series, and though she is a horse a night mare to be exact , she s still handled with the same sort of disrespect that Anthony frequently frames his female characters At one point she is made powerless because a man tricks her into being dominated by him he gets on her back and fits her with a bit, and she can t escape , and later the same man turns out to be a shapeshifter who dominates her by shifti [...]

  4. Frustrating though imaginative, mean spirited and misogynistic, an example of how not to portray women in fiction It saddens me to say that this will be the last Xanth novel I read for the forseeable future Once I slogged through Night Mare I no longer wanted to spend time with this writer, and it s for the strangest reason This book, featuring a female protagonist destined to save her kingdom from ultimate destruction, is just a diatribe against women.Imbri is a former Night Mare, a horse that [...]

  5. I think this is the only Anthony book I ve ever read I don t know why I never read of him so I could have the horrific double vision OH GOD NO experience later in life so many of my GoodReads peers did I mean, that sounds so appealing.I think I was distracted by Le Guin.

  7. This series is such a cute, refreshing world to relax in It is full of lovable, interesting, optimistic characters and creative, hilarious puns Like popcorn, this novel can be finished off quickly and with little remorse I read it over the course of a few hours each night before bed, but only stopped reading because I had to All the plot twists combined with the riddle filled prophesies made me wish I could just spend a full day reading to see what happens next I was totally wrong in trying to f [...]

  8. Sometimes when feeling down and in need of an escape, I visit Xanth Again, I am glad I did as Night Mare is a light, fun, fast, enjoyable read.Anthony employs the same successful formula as compared to prior installments Yet he still manages to keep each forthcoming story fresh and creative This particular volume reunited me with several favorite characters from all prior editions The dream world aspect continues to be fascinating and entertaining The major mystery revelation is fairly obvious M [...]

  9. The story works very well as a culmination of the books that had followed Seeing most of the main characters from preceding books play, sometimes small, yet useful parts in the story was quite enjoyable While I didn t find myself to invested in the main heroine, I still found her a fine character and a fine catalyst for the stories monumental war on Xanth.

  10. This, the 6th Xanth book, is sort of hit or miss for me On one hand, it is the first time that we get a female protagonist and it turns out that Piers does just fine writing for the opposite sex It also continues the new trend from the last book of having a non human protagonist She s a horse Well, correctly a night mare which is a horse which delivers dreams Imbrium has found herself changed from the other night mares after gaining part of a soul at the end of the previous book and as such has [...]

  11. For some reason, this is the only one of my Xanth books which I have kept since my own early adulthood, when I devoured all of them 8 of them, I think, at the time in a remarkably short time and then lost all interest before the next one had come out This is the sixth in the series, and it certainly wasn t the best I may have held on to it because of the extensive use of the nightmare world of the gourds, but I suspect that it was just the luck that in this case the cover never fell off.At the t [...]

  12. Xanth is a fantasy novel that is based almost entirely on wordplay, specifically puns The series occupies a strange space between silly and weird Anthony has some odd opinions on themes, such as sex, racism, prejudice, growing up, and the use of magic in everyday life The writing vacillates between heavy handed condescending to extended analysis of magic, science, and the application of the rules of Xanth Some love it, some hate it I personally thought it was a strange read but harmless, althoug [...]

  13. I liked the book, but had trouble getting into the first half of the story It probably deserves 3 1 2 stars instead of the three I gave it.For those who read Ogre, Ogre, you will find some of the same characters appear in this story, including the main character, Mare Imbrie Still carrying a half of a soul, Imbrie has not been doing well as a Night Mare She has trouble being as sinister as she needs to be, and even dreams of seeing the rainbow The Night Stallion sends her out into the day, with [...]

  14. Night Mare reads like a lazy attempt to revisit all of the characters from the previous novels in the Xanth series It will be the last Xanth book that I read, and probably the last Piers Anthony book that I read. While younger readers might appreciate the childish humor, mainly in the form of puns and wordplay, Night Mare like almost all of the other Xanth novels, offers nothing for someone wanting to delve into a good fantasy novel There really isn t anything redeeming for younger readers, eithe [...]

  15. Night Mare and the rest of the Xanth series sadly didn t hold up to a re reading as an adult, but as a pre teen and young teenager, I found these hilarious and wonderful.Piers Anthony specializes in a kind of subversive and dirty humor that s just on this side of not appropriate for children They re also almost terrifying, in a way that left me wanting That combined with the mythology made for absorbing childhood reading for me.The one thing that saved the book upon my adult re read was the ama [...]

  16. Imbrium is a Night Mare who, like many in her land, gets charmed by the Horseman while investigating the rash of kidnapped Xanthian kings As and of Xanth s royalty are getting transported to a hypnotic state, the next successor must take the throne, and it may be up to Imbrium to break the chain. This was the only Xanth book that I liked as much as the first one Mostly because the ideas in the gourd world invention were pretty fresh and unique What I didn t like so much was again how ladies wer [...]

  17. I think this was the second of the Xanth series I read, starting this one right after I read Dragon on a Pedestal I thought this was almost exactly as entertaining a book, with lots of cute puns and an interesting story Piers Anthony combines the mare in nightmare with both mare for female horse and lunar mare the dark basaltic seas that are the large dark patches on the moon s surface , to come up with the Night Mare concept of black horses carrying bad dreams to sleepers I still think that s p [...]

  18. Update figured out what happened to my review Definitely shouldn t try to do this when I m sick because I hit the wrong button, lost my window and ended up starting a completely new review with a different edition without realizing it All better now. This book was my introduction to the world of Piers Anthony To be brief, I ve never looked back Eventually, I ll write a in depth review, but the short version is if you do not like puns, you won t enjoy any of the Xanth novels If you want to laugh, [...]

  19. A night mare that no longer does well delivering bad dreams has a problem Xanth is being invaded by the NextWave of Mundanians, another problem The Kings of Xanth are being ensorcerelled, another problem How will all the problems be solved By following this advice, Beware the Horseman Of course everyone is beware of the horseman, but none know exactly who the horseman is and that is the flaw in the plan.Filled with puns which are always fun and layers upon layers of twist and turns this is a ver [...]

  20. My book review is over Night Mare it is about These different types of horses one sends dreams one doesn t and one is only able to be out at night while the other is Able to be out at day this is about a horse that is a mix of a day mare and a nightmare her name is imbrie she was sent on a mission to inform the king Beware The Horseman she runs into a few problems especially one where she needs help because she runs into the Horse man She is on her way to warn the king the most common quote is B [...]

  21. Naturally no human person was a handsome as a horse First non humanoid protagonist in a Xanth novel, Night Mare features mare Imbrium named after the mares on the Moon a tidbit I had to look up, then found interesting attempting to help thwart a barbarian invasion from Mundania.I love prophecies, because I love spending the book trying to figure things out Anthony is great at creating a story, where, at the climax, everything falls perfectly into place Eureka Plus, a horse as a heroine

  22. I read some of the books in this series a long time ago and I remember that while the first three were decent the next three were not as good I recently reviewed the plot of this book after re reading Centaur Aisle and unfortunately while the world is great and the characters are good the writing is bogged down with so much unnecessary detail It s a shame really because I could have seen myself reading the rest of the series if the books were shorter, especially since I remember really liking th [...]

  23. The Nightmare Imbrium is sent on a mission by the Night Stallion, to deliver a message to king Trent The message, Beware the Horseman, is not understood and the focus turns to the invading Mundanes, called the Nextwave King Trint, along with each successor is caught up in a sightless open eyed stare With ten kings taken out in this manner, and Xanth under attack by the Mundanes, it is left up to Imbri to find the cause and to save Xanth This book is full of suspense, making it hard to put down.

  24. i first discovered this series in high school for a book report where i read demons dont dream i found the book a couple years ago and was like hey i liked this book in high school ill read it again and liked it again after some research i found out it was the 16th book in a series of over 30 books i was like i will conquer this series Piers Anthony s series is fun to read though not that memorable the series does build on each book so im excited to see where it ll go in 15 books.

  25. By far the best entry I ve read so far in Piers Anthony s Xanth series After the ruling men of the land fall victim to the sorcerous powers of a hidden enemy, Imbri the night mare becomes the unlikely hero as she and the other women of Xanth must rally the forces of magic and might against the brutal, invading Mundane army Chock full of cameos by characters from every previous adventure, this entry builds on the magical world of Xanth that has been vividly illustrated by Anthony and enthralls th [...]

  26. I love this particular Xanth book because it is in the point of view of Imbri, a night mare whom you hear a lot about in the previous books, and it s nice to know that the night mares weren t just doing their duty like dumb mammals they had thoughts and feelings too Piers Anthony constantly amazes me with his intricate world and funny puns, along with the adult humor that is just on the borderline of out of hand for a teen.I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone, and I hope they love [...]

  27. I know a lot of people end their Xanth experiences with this book, but it is honestly one of my favorites I m not sure if that s just because I love Imbri, or that loads of my favorite characters get scenes in this one, or just the plain unique angle you get of Xanth from this one, but I know I love it.Beware the Horseman the message has been delivered, but the full force of the statement doesn t become clear until the end Will Xanth fall, or can the night mare save them all Another great book, [...]

  28. I m writing one review for all the Xanth books I ve read because the same can be said of all of them For a brief period in 9th and 10th grade I LOVED these books With a strange mania Now um, not so much I ve chosen to split the difference between the score I would have given these books then OMG, 5 STARZ 1 and what I d give them now probably a 2 or 3 If you have a love for punning, humorous fantasy and mild bawdiness give them a try.

  29. Nightmare was a a fantastic addition to the Xanth novels Nightmare is about a night horse who terrifies people in there dreams, but because she saw a rainbow she finds herself wanting to see and because of her curiosity she is turned into a day horse to assist king Trent and bink and his son in a daring Quest that has twists and turns that you aren t expecting I would recommend this to any fantasy reader
