  1. What a brilliant concept and execution A 4th century warrior acquires holy alien armor Adventure Sword fighting Space battles Sign me up So this is a relaunch of a well established series Like many newer comic readers I haven t read the original series, but this didn t hinder my understanding in the least I think if I love this series I ll go back and read the old stuff, which is what I usually do I won t ruin the plot, but I will say that it s a perfect blend of historical fiction, other world, [...]

  2. Find this and other Reviews at In Tori LexI was pleasantly surprised by how great this time traveling, alien adventure is It was funny, engaging and full of action Aric is a wonderful protagonist who wants to defend the Visgoth people and his honor at all costs When the story begins in 400 AD, Aric is Visgoth Warrior leading his men to battle Despite being quickly captured by aliens and facing technology he has never seen before, he was able to adjust to his circumstances and rise up to escape t [...]

  3. Aric is a 5th century Visigoth warrior fighting the Roman Empire who have driven his people from Dacia, their homeland modern day Romania During a fateful battle, he loses his father and wife thanks to his brash, immature tactics and later, while leading a rescue party, he encounters what he believes to be a Roman slave vessel only to discover it s an alien craft The alien race known as the Vine abduct Aric and a number of his people, taking them to their ships to toil as slaves, cultivating the [...]

  4. I ve heard nothing but good things about the Valiant Universe and since my brain seems to give me this undying need to read every comic ever written, I eventually found a detailed reading list for the the entire Valiant line since 2012 because I am a sadist and dove right in with this first volume of their original flagship title, X O Manowar I had no idea what to expect, outside of a few comics written by Robert Venditti that I d read before primarily his Green Lantern and Flash runs. The story [...]

  5. My first Valiant comic a good start to a promising new Universe. An enjoyable read with some great action illustration, however I feel like a lot of key points were glazed over in this first issue, I m hoping they are flushed out in further issues I m intrigued enough to continue with the next volume.

  6. X O Manowar volume 1 kicks off the new Valiant Entertainment comic line that restarted in 2012 I really want to get into Valiant comics but there aren t at on in the library system and I haven t started buying them yet Amazingly this popped up in the library s database recently and I was exceptionally happy to finally give it a try X O Manowar is an Iron Man type of hero, he has a suit of armor that makes him strong, but the biggest difference is that X O is from the 4th century Aric is a barbar [...]

  7. 3.5 stars if I could.I don t know jack in regards to the whole Valiant universe from the 90 s I don t know jack about the Valiant reboots of now I do know, however, that this was a pretty fun read I mean seriously, A barbarian in space Yes, please

  8. Find this and many other reviews at Geekritique I m on a Valiant kick And no, don t worry, I won t spam your feeds like I did last week with three reviews in a day But that was fun Valiant Entertainment is at the top of their game, in seemingly every book of theirs I get my hands on And with their recent 5 film deal with Sony Pictures, many of their most acclaimed characters will be brought to life on screen For those who don t know what their deal is, Valiant is a comic book company that was ex [...]

  9. I was never a fan of the original Valiant line way back in the early 90 s, and thought that books like Rai and Turok were just basement bargain comics that deserved to be in the 10 for 1 box beneath the other back issues So when I heard that someone was resurrecting the Valiant line, I was severely skeptical and even after reading two volumes of XO, I remain a skeptic I ll say that this doesn t exactly live up to its hype, and that I d much prefer to read Wood and Cloonan s Current Conan series [...]

  11. I spent some time with Valiant in the 90s as a kid I had an X O Manowar poster, and even his weird crossover Playstation game with Iron Man When the Summer of Valiant happened, it was almost surreal to see new takes on characters I had grown to see as dated This reboot is wonderful, re inventing some truly unique concepts that were well worth revisiting The time displaced barbarian in plant monster ritual armor is an awesome character, that still has a lot to offer the comic book world I am stok [...]

  12. Really interesting I can see why this is the main Valiant title, it definitely has that Batman Superman Ironman Cap America feel to it, if that makes sense.

  13. This was my first Valiant experience and I freaking loved it, it left me compelled to read the rest of the catalogue on Valiant Entertainment, is that good.

  14. Good relaunch This version of X O Manowar has the right blend of gritty ancient world and high concept science fiction wrapped up in a superhero comic Venditti s writing is pretty strong here and the art is consistent It was a strong return for a character that had some missteps in the 1990s run.

  15. How do you rate a book that is basically exactly what you were expecting it to be This relaunch of X O Manowar certainly met my expectations in those regards, but I seem to have breezed through the 4 issues so quickly no lasting impression was really made.

  16. I enjoyed the pulpy, action adventure mix of historical origins and sci fi hero s quest an ancient nomadic warrior Aric is abducted by aliens and turns out to be worthy of their superpowered suit of armor just in time to come back to earth in the modern day, with all the trappings of Aric missing his old way of life and not understanding what s happened since then Between The Force Awakens and this book, I ve seen a lot of space age clays Nord s artwork is up to the task of showing off the dispa [...]

  17. Conan the barbarian meets space opera A Visigoth warrior, fights for freedom against the Romans used to spilling blood on the battle field he s accustomed to the sticky red coating his person and soddening the ground beneath his feat Fearless in the face of death, Aric of Dacia fights to preserve his family s life and the way of the Visigoth people The opening pages of 1 of BY THE SWORD conveys this message through beautiful rendered graphics and tightly formulated dialogue Aric s warrior nature [...]

  18. I ve been reading comic books mostly as trade paperback collected editions since I was in high school Until now, my experience has been almost exclusively limited to the Big Two comics companies, DC and Marvel But in the last year I started to hear about good things coming from a company called Valiant Comics, and I decided it was worth a look, as I m always game for a good story As I m a newcomer to the Valiant Universe , I figured a natural place to begin would be with their flagship title X O [...]

  20. 2.5 5Unfortunately, I am not the biggest fan of this one Valiant s first volume of their X O Manowar reboot, By The Sword seemed to lack the potential and capacity for depth and failed to spark my interest. Our hero, Aric, is an ancient Visigoth warrior who is abducted by an alien species after leading a failed battle against the Roman Empire It is upon this alien craft that he discovers a suit of armor capable of bestowing power upon those worthy of wearing it Personally, I felt disconnected fro [...]

  21. I quite enjoyed this book It s a fairly lightweight action story which combines ancient Rome with alien Iron Man type armor and invading insectoid aliens The hot headed Visigoth warrior Aric leads the charge into battle against Roman legions, as the alien Vine are using the confusion and disarray of war to infiltrate humanity by planting sleeper agents and abducting human slaves It s an interesting mash up of a premise that promises some wide screen space opera in future installments, but we get [...]

  22. This has been described as Conan the Barbarian meets the Iron Man armour, and well, I can t really argue with that This was a promising start Aric comes off a bit too stupid to live in some places, but I assume his character is going to have some growth The Vine are an interesting villain, although they veer into evil caricatures sometimes They story is mostly set up, but it was interesting set up, that left lots of questions I m desperate to have answered As for the art, I didn t really have an [...]

  23. Great start Oh, this is about middle age Visigoths in space fighting aliens who have magical armor and after obtaining the armor travel back to Earth but it s modern day That s a lot of layers to cover in four issues.

  24. While I had no interest in this one I was surprised I enjoyed it as much as I did I think the midway twist really got me into the story The way the story is allowed to jump around through different times keeps it interesting.

  25. After attending a Valiant panel introducing the various comic book series, I picked up a few trade paperbacks of a few of their series Although I was not familiar with the original series from several years ago, I was intrigued by the story when it was highlighted during the panel discussion Volume 1 By the Sword collects the first four issues of this multi volume series Readers are dropped into 402 AD in Northern Italy where the Visigoths are facing off against the Roman legions think David ver [...]

  26. BCDER 84X O Manowar, Volume 1 is a nice starting point to the entire 2012 relaunch of the Valiant universe I enjoy the Vine as adversaries, especially the religious aspects of their armor worship A very interesting and quick read thus far Aric is another Conan troupe but with Ironman type technology.Synopsis view spoiler 01 Blades and Open Fields The beginning of the new 2012 era of Valiant begins with the brash Aric of Dacia leading the Visigoths into a non winnable battle that results in his f [...]

  28. I expected it going in, but this is my favorite story so far in the rebooted Valiant universe A Visigoth warrior from the early first millennium accidentally gets space armor and ends up in modern times fighting a brutal alien race Aric is kind of like Iron Man if he didn t know how his armor worked , Superman because his whole world is gone , and Thor because he s an ancient warrior mixed together That s cool I can t wait to get past the origin story and see how Aric adapts to the modern world.
