Matt's Family

Book

Book Matt's Family I bought this book about 12 years ago and finally got around to reading it while my eReader was charging only to find out it was the second book of a series (wouldn't you know it? Grrr). I think I would have liked this book more if I'd read the first one. Maybe I would have been a little more sympathetic to the plight of Kristin. This is a story based on a military family. I can appreciate that. But it was awkward and intended to be since Matt was held prisoner in Africa for five years then came home to find out that the girl who had been his fiance was now married to his brother. She was pregnant when Matt left and while he was gone, she married his brother and THEY had a kid together, too. So, she's got one kid by each brother. Weird...She divorces Luke, Matt's brother and then marries Matt whom she was going to marry in the first place. This all happens like in the first two pages which is why I should have read the first book first. Maybe I would have felt differently about the situation as a whole.Well, things go south and Matt's mom is such a barracuda and making Kristin feel like crap. Then the oldest kid found out that Matt was her real dad and Luke was her sister's dad and she started acting out negatively which got old really fast.Erin, Matt's daughter is 9 years old. I have a 9-year old son of my own and I can tell you that he does not run my house like these kids were running Kristin's and Matt's. I would have taken only so much of her insolence, disrespect and destructive behavior before I would have taken some other course of action. I was giving Matt a cheer when he decided that he was going to do something about it before whiny-assed Kristin stepped in and stopped him.I got tired of Kristin and her martyrdom real quick and I felt bad for Matt because no matter what he did, he could not win. He was like the devil incognito to her in a lot of ways and the truth of the matter was he was a nice guy that was trying to do everything right. The smartest person in the book was Kristin's mother. She wasn't a major player but she made a difference.I gave the book two stars based only upon this book. I may have given it more if I'd read the first book and really gotten a feel for the overall story. . Good Book Matt's Family This is a descent story but some of the characters almost ruined the story for me. Throughout the whole story I felt so bad for Matt. He tries so hard and it seems like everything he does is wrong and unappreciated. Kristen is uncompromising and I honestly started to feel that her being with Matt was just out of guilt. She definitely didn’t seem like she valued his opinions or even his feelings. I don’t know who was worse Kristen or their bratty daughter Erin. I can understand some of Erin’s anger and behavior issues but the lack of discipline was ridiculous. My heart literally hurt when she told Matt that she wished he had died. Thank goodness they finally got it together in the end. All in all it was an good story.
