Risk Assessment and Health & Safety

A risk assessment identifies hazards and elements of an event which could cause harm.  The risk assessment analyses these and decides on the suitable and correct measures to eliminate or control the risks.

If there are five or more people employed at an event the findings must be written down and recorded.

For large events risk assessments must be carried out for the build-up, the event itself and the breakdown and contributions will be required from all contractors involved in the project.  .

Why do events need a risk assessment?

  • The event organiser is responsible to the public to ensure the event is run in a safe manner.
  • By carrying out the risk assessment you are ensuring that you have considered and though through the safety implications of the activity or event and taken all possible steps to reduce risks, where appropriate;
  • Although a risk assessment does not guarantee that nothing will go wrong, but acting on its findings will significantly reduce the chance of problems occurring;
  • If anything does goes wrong, a risk assessment will show that you have done your best to predict and remove any risks. For anyone facing a claim or prosecution relating to health and safety, the difference between having and not having a written risk assessment may be significant.
